Bravo to Bradshaw

The E! channel (I promise I do watch other channels, but just not that often) has started airing old episodes of Sex and the City, you know the Big years, the Aidan years, the years where Carrie smoked, you know when the show was actually a respectable HBO show instead of a two hour freak show cleverly masked by fancy clothes and martinis in the desert.

Four channels below the wonderful E! is the even more wonderful Bravo where they show amazing programming such as :The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Real Housewives of New York, The Real Housewives of New Jersey and the Real Housewives of D.C. Have I forgotten any?

Now, you see my dilemma? Which to watch?

These shows are programmed at the same time, even at 10 am there is usually an episode of Sex and the City playing simultaneously to an episode of The Real Housewives. So what's a girl to do except flip.

Ding Ding Ding! Move over Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.

First off, after watching reruns of Sex and the City I realized that despite the few moments of heart and truth the show seems to be just as silly (still fun and entertaining) as any episode of the Housewives. They both have the same premise: women who seem to have an endless amount of time, money and men at their disposal. However, neither represent women in the best light. Do women really sit around and talk about sex or their amazing houses in the Hamptons?

Yes of course they do, but it seems like the limits have been pushed so far that women don't strive to be the next Fran Lebowitz or the next Dorothy Vogel. Instead they want to be the next slutty Samantha or the next chain smoking Kim. I just hope that we are not going back. Yes these shows are entertaining and I might be a hypocrite for even questioning the foundation of what these shows are built upon that creates the entertainment, but I guess I'm just getting bored with the hysteria of women that these shows seem to highlight. Are women trying to make the world a better place or get on tv?

  1. I'm with you BK, I remember a line from Sex and the City when Miranda says: "it's like high school, but with careers." I thought Bravo was supposed to be an art channel? Good thing I have limited cable.
