Face Odyssey: 2003

So, I went to see "The Social Network" while honeymooning in Maui. Yes me and my husband found one of the few movie theaters in Maui and spent an afternoon inside a deep, dank, dark movie theater instead of surfing. I know. But I was peeling!

But I'm glad that we sacrificed a few hours of "fun in th' sun" to see this wonderful gem of a film. I am so happy to see an "inspirational" movie that doesn't involve Sandra Bullock dying her hair blond or Tom Hanks running somewhere or Jaden Smith learning karate.

The Social Network was written so well that I felt like I needed to go to night school just to keep up with the dialogue. Aaron Sorkin found the heartbreak behind the encyclopedic minds of these young overachieving Harvard students. The acting was so impeccable that I was beginning to think that Jesse Eisenberg's eye might just twitch right out of his head. Justin Timberlake's Sean-a-Thon was probably one of the best things I have seen in a long time. Mara Rooney who played Mark's lost love: Erika, who stole every scene she was in and elegantly played the moral good fairy to Mark's selfish overachieving devil. Armie Hammer who played twins: Cameron Winklevuss and Tyler Winklevuss found the anger and self loathing that comes along with attaining perfection.

Not only was this an exceptionally well made movie but it was about an exceptional human being. Mark Zuckerberg is a billionaire because he had an idea and went with it. He defines the enterpenuarial spirit of the new digital millennium. Yes the Winklevuss twins had a contribution with the "Harvard Connection", and Eduardo had the initial logarithm to start Face Smash, but Mark is Facebook,. He has evolved Facebook to a point where we love it. We love to see who is married, engaged, or single. We love to see pictures of newborn babies. We love to read the newest and latest happenings of the world. Facebook is our social network. Even if you are not on it (my husband), it still effects you.

Despite the narrative of the lawsuit, the thing that was incredible about this story is that it reminded me that anything is possible. As lame as that sounds, I do feel that no matter how crappy things seem in terms of your life goals, you can still go home and execute an idea and make billions of dollars. That still happens!!!

It is a new world. Bars and frathouses have been replaced with Blackberries and Ipads. Is this good or bad? I'm not sure, and that is for another article, but the point is that a heartbroken socially awkward kid invented it. That is amazing!
